Keeping Our Linemen Safe After a Power Outage

Brought to you by Kilowatt Electric LLC – Your Trusted Electrician in Asheville, NC

When the power goes out, our linemen and linewomen work tirelessly—often in dangerous conditions—to restore electricity and keep our communities running. These heroes put their lives on the line so we can enjoy the quality of life we often take for granted. But did you know that we can help keep them safe while they do their jobs?

One of the biggest risks linemen face after a storm or natural disaster is backfeeding—when electricity from a generator flows in the opposite direction through power lines. This can electrocute utility workers who believe the lines are de-energized. Here’s how you can prevent this and do your part to keep them safe:

Use Portable Generators Safely

  • Never plug a portable generator directly into a wall outlet. This can send power back into the grid, creating a deadly hazard.
  • Instead, have a licensed electrician install an interlock kit with an inlet plug. This ensures your generator powers only your home and not the power lines outside.

Install Standby Generators Professionally

  • Automatic, whole-home standby generators should always be professionally installed to meet electrical codes and prevent dangerous backfeeding.

Be Mindful of Power Lines

  • Stay at least 30 feet away from any downed lines and assume they are live.
  • Report downed or damaged power lines immediately to your utility company.

Our linemen and linewomen are the backbone of our electrical grid, and a little precaution on our end goes a long way in keeping them safe. Let’s do our part to protect those who protect our power! 💡⚡
